Lyrics & translation of Surya Mantra 'Tat Savitur Vrnimahe Vayam'..

Number of beautiful hymns are present in our Veda's to praise the Sun (Surya devta). Today I heard one of the hymn,  when I was watching Mahabharat on Star Plus.

In today's episode, this was played in the background, while Karan (son of solar deity Sun) was offering argh to Surya Narayan:

तत सवितुर वर्णीमहे वयं देवस्य भोजनम
शरेष्ठं सर्वधातमं तुरम भगस्य धीमहि ||
विश्वानि देव सवितर दुरितानि परा सुव |
यद भद्रं तन न आ सुव ||

Tat savitur vrnīmahe vayam devasya bhojanam |
Srestham sarvadhātamam turam bhaghasya dhīmahi ||
Viśvāni deva savitar duritāni parā suva |
Yad bhadram tan na ā suva ||

It means,
We desire of Savitar the God this fortune much to be enjoyed,
The best, all-yielding, glorious gift of Bhaga we would gladly win..
Savitar, God, send far away all mourning and tragedies,
And send us only what is good..

The 1st mantra is in Anustup Chhanda, whereas the following ones from the 2nd to the 9th ones are in the Gayatri Chhanda. Anustup Chhanda has four lines. Whereas, Gayatri chhanda consist of three padas or lines, each line having eight syllables.

For those uninitiated, Chhanda is the metre that is used, and can be derived from the sequence of LONG (guru - heavy) and SHORT (laghu - light) syllables.

I am sure you must be confused, who is Savita or Savitar or Savitr  or Savitah?.. Well Savita is a symbol of the Divine. On the eternity / infinite plane , Savita means God. Whereas on the physical plane, it means Sun. On the supernatural plane it means cleverness and on the biological plane, it means liveliness.

In Hindu Shastra's the Surya is described as Savita and is one of the Aditya's.  According to Rigveda, Aditya's are the seven deities (dev) of the heaven, namely Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, Bhaga, Daksha, Anśa and Savitar.

In our Universe, Surya/Sun/Savita is the source of all the things. It is through His Divine Grace that the Universe exists.

The 'Savitur' in the Gayatri Mantra is derived from Savita, that's why the Gayatri Mantra is often referred as the Savitri Mantra as this magical mantra speaks of the Sun.

तत सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि |
धियो यो नः परचोदयात ||

Tat saviturvarenyam bhargho devasya dhīmahi|
Dhiyo yo nah pracodayāt ||

May we attain that excellent glory of Savitar the God, so May he motivate our prayers.
